Not only is this a book by a currently popular, culturally diverse author, but the author's story of perseverance and achieving significance in spite of real obstacles is inspiring. I want my students, most of whom are in minority and marginalized and poor populations, to read these kinds of stories, that they would be motivated to achieve good and great things in their lives. I don't preach fame or notoriety, but I want them to learn from those who have risen above their circumstances. We have to read (I teach English); I want them to read uplifting and motivating texts.
