Base 10 pieces are essential when learning subtraction with ungrouping, which is what my students are learning right now. Subtraction is very difficult for students to learn, so it is best to teach it conceptually using concrete materials like base 10 pieces. Unfortunately, we do not have enough to send home with kids, and with COVID-19 many of our kids are fully learning remotely and many are hybrid and only get to come into school 2 times per week. I am asking for enough base 10 pieces so I can send one to each student to use at home so they can learn the best way possible. I am also asking for copies of our novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In reading, we do novel study where I read a chapter book aloud and kids follow along as they read. Many kids are not able to get a copy of the book and can only listen when they are at home. Following along helps students become better readers, and I want all of my students to have that opportunity. I am also asking for timers so students can help stay on schedule during this time!
