Hands-on activities help students to internalize their learning. We have been studying Native Americans and how they use Wampum Belts as a form of oral history. We have also been studying them to give a more well rounded perspective on the American Revolution. Students will be able to create a Wampum Belt with a symbol of one of the themes we have studied in class such as unity, peace, harmony, sovereignty etc. This project will help students make their own Wampum Belt that they can be proud of and keep as a token of their own learning. This is also an interdisciplinary project because students will incorporate math as they calculate the fraction of each color they chose to include in their design.
