In the midst of a world wide pandemic, our school has made mindfulness and emotional self-regulation skills a priority. Our students feel the stress, uncertainty, and sense of loss that many of us adults feel. Every morning, our students are led through a mindfulness activity designed to help students relieve stress and center their focus on the present so they can learn to their fullest potential. Similar activities are used during classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individual counseling sessions. The Mindful Kids card deck, Self-Calming cards and Yoga Pretzels activities will help us to keep these activities going for our students. Our students need support as they work through anxious feelings and anger due to the current circumstances. Many of our students have said they really miss interacting with their friends and school staff. During small group or individual counseling sessions, my students are more willing to participate if we play a game or complete an activity together. The You Can Control Your Worries and You Can Control Your Anger learning games will allow the students to engage in an interactive activity and build connections with others, all while learning coping strategies to help them self-regulate their emotions. Similarly, the Social Emotional prompts will encourage our students to recognize their feelings and share their thoughts with others. All of these resources will be easily integrated into virtual learning; however, they will also be utilized when we return back to our beloved school building!
