Traditionally, for the last 28 years, my first graders have made candy gingerbread houses in December. It is the highlight of their first-grade year! Using their creativity and a lot of candy, they produce works of art that they enjoy writing an expository piece about. Prior to COVID, families have donated the candy, frosting, graham crackers, milk cartons and other supplies used to make the gingerbread masterpieces. Due to current restrictions, I am unable to ask for these food donations. These first graders deserve to keep the gingerbread house tradition alive COVID style! Times may have changed due to COVID, but one thing is for certain, imagination and creativity are essential to first grade learning. By receiving these craft gingerbread houses, the students will have the opportunity to still use their thinking skills to create individualized gingerbread houses and write about them. They may not be the "traditional" gingerbread houses they are used to, but it will be a memory they will never forget. Times may have changed due to COVID, but the memories we create today will continue to inspire our future.
