I spend the first 15 minutes of the day teaching and discussing social emotional skills. These skills prepare and help our students learn. It is crucial that we continue to support students’ development of their social and emotional skills. Masks have made it difficult to identify a person’s emotion and COVID has limited kids from socializing with each other. The materials I need in my classroom to support this area are social emotional books, calming down materials for my peace corner area, and materials that I can utilize to teach as a group. One of the best ways to teach social and emotional development is through storytelling. Children connect with books in a special way making the lessons behind the stories meaningful. Any support will contribute to helping young children develop the social and emotional skills they need to be successful in life.
