My school is a large Title 1 school with more than 75% of the students considered at-risk by the state of Texas. We have a diverse student population with more than 4,000 students and over 80 languages spoken. 73% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Despite these challenges, many of our students achieve great academic success. In order to improve their reading and writing skills they need books to read during the summer. Books are a luxury that their families can not afford. Research has shown that the gap in reading and writing skills is largely due to the loss of skills during the summer months. My students want to fulfill the American dream and be the first in their families to go to college. Losing skills every summer pushes them further away from their dreams. They need the reading and writing skills that will help them accomplish their goals and dreams.
