We will use it to catch benthic (mud) invertebrates. The species caught indicates water quality, for example dragonfly larvae and clams are indicator species of good water quality, while leeches are indicator of low oxygen polluted waters. \r\n\r\nThe AP students will take good care of such an expensive piece of equipment. When the students opened the box, they were inquisitive as to its purpose. When I explained they might catch a leech they were both sqeamish and interested. \r\n\r\nMy next project will be topping up consumable water quality test kits. We will use them to accommodate two new teachers and their accompanying classes. Our program tripled in size!\r\n\r\nThe shovels will be used to gather longitudinal slices of soil, put into jars, shaken with water to loosen the soil particles and then let to sit for a week. The soil will stratify into layers, sand on the bottom, silt in the middle, and clay on the top. A soil texture triangle will then be used to calculate the soil type such as loam, clay, etc.\r\n\r\nThe soil samplers will be used to collect a 3 inch narrow sample of soil, and then used to measure nitrogen, phosphate, pH, and potassium. The students will determine soil deficiencies and suggest various fertilizers to apply. \r\n\r\nThank you again for the equipment! The students will use the bottles to determine the biological oxygen demand in polluted and unpolluted stream samples. A high oxygen demand indicates polluted water, while a low biological oxygen demand indicates clean pristine water. \r\n\r\nMost of the time our stream outside the school is clean. Attached in the photos will be a sample report that the students write. This technique was one of the FRQ questions on the AP test last year! The students reported that they did well on that question! This year i have 20 more kids, so needed more bottles. \r\n\r\nAgain, much gratitude for the BOD bottles. They will be used for our environmental science and aquatic science classes. In addition, we will use them to test parameters of water quality in our water resources and water pollution units. \r\n\r\nThe students unboxed the the kits and helped to put them in the closet. One was opened for current use. The AP students recently used the kits to analyze the phosphorus cycle (phosphate test) , the nitrogen cycle (nitrite, nitrate tests) hardness as calcium carbonate, and the carbon cycle, (CO2 and Dissolved oxygen).\r\n\r\nMy next steps are our classrooms need garden shovels for soil sample collection. When teenagers need to talk to someone, some prefer to have their hands occupied and play with fidget spinners and calming tools during the counseling session to help them gather their thoughts.
