In my social skills classes the students learn a variety of strategies such as breathing, counting, etc. to self-regulate when they are in an emotional state. By using these sensory tools, students can self-regulate their emotions which help them stay in their classrooms and continue learning with their classmates. By learning self-regulation strategies, and with the help of sensory tools, students can stay focused on what needs to be done and controlling their emotions. The process of self-regulation is needed for all areas of the students' life, not just being educated at school.
