All kids need to move in order to function. Movement is how they stay in tune with their surroundings and how they learn to regulate their responses to their surroundings. Kids aren't meant to sit still for prolonged periods of time. They're built to move, explore, and learn using their whole bodies! Under normal circumstances and for our kiddos who have high sensory needs, we build movement breaks into their day. Kids need these outlets and research shows that when they are given opportunities for movement and short bursts of physical activity, we achieve better attention/focus, less restlessness, and increased participation in the classroom. At this time, with COVID-19 and with opportunities for physical movement around the classroom further curtailed, my special needs kiddos are really struggling. I will use flexible seating options for my kiddos in their general education and special education classrooms to help meet their sensory needs for movement, and this will in turn help them remain engaged and able to learn. Additionally, flexible seating can also promote core strength, balance, coordination, and posture, all necessary skills for our kids to develop not only in the school environment but in their day to day lives.
