Good listening is essential for language development. Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. In order to differentiate meaning, the same syllable can be pronounced with different tones. Mandarin has four main tones and one neutral tone (or, as some say, five tones). Each tone has a distinctive pitch contour, and important part of the Chinese language is hearing the various tones. I recently was given the use of a classroom set of Chromebooks. However, without headphones, the students are not able to hear individualized content without disturbing their classmates. If my students had headphones, we would be able to implement the technology more effectively and improve their listening skills.
