Maps and globes can take you anywhere; even in the middle of a pandemic! Having individual student maps is necessary to teach geography. It is the basic tool for all geographers! Students will have the opportunity to write and erase as they locate specific places studied in history. For example, as I teach my students about the American Revolution, they can locate the original colonies and note the physical features of the land or even trace the "Trail of Tears" of Native Americans across the United States during the westward expansion periods.
Individual student maps help develop geographic reasoning, comparison and contextualization skills. Using maps will make a difference in my student's learning by strengthening their awareness of where places are in relationship to each other. For instance, I will use the compass rose from the map to emphasize directionally as they make verbal descriptions. Also, students can identify various landforms and compare them across states. Lastly, individual student maps supports the recommended school health guidelines to limit the transition of coronavirus during the pandemic. Your donation of maps to my students will not only assist in their learning but connect them to the global community.
