I have been blessed with a group of diligent students this year who despite all odds, are determined to join me online each day and engage in reading rich literature and having conversations about texts. It broke my heart one afternoon when a student said to me, "I can't do my homework and read for 20 minutes tonight because I don't have any books at my house." Over half of my students are reading below grade level, largely due to the fact that they do not read enough at home. Most of my students come from homes that do not have the funds to buy books or school supplies. My students are excited about reading chapter books and would love nothing more than to have some books of their own. My goal is to provide three or more books for every student in my classroom to have at home this school year.
