Most of our students fall far under their grade level for literacy, they also are highly resistant to reading, but have had little access to recreational reading. I want to use children's books, which are less intimidating to students, in order to address their reading difficulties so that we can spark a love of reading. Part of what makes Roots High School special is that we also have a farm where the students can grow produce and care for animals from chickens to sheep to alpaca. Studies have found that students that read to animals are more likely to read, and thus, improve. If I get this project funded I will use these children's books to create a unit in the spring where the students read these books to the animals, learn about the structure of narrative writing, and write their own stories.
