Our students are extremely avid readers. Every week they show us how much they enjoy reading by continuously accumulating more minutes and stories read than the week before. We want to continue to foster this love of reading, and the best way we know how is to reward them for a job well done. Showing the students that we are paying attention to what they are doing, and we see them making an effort is really important to us. Our students get to pick from an assortment of books to add to their home library every week, and we include a small prize with each book to encourage them to continue reading. We found that the kids get extremely excited to pick out a book and prize every Friday. Everyday they ask us who is winning on this weeks race, and reply with "I'm going to read 2 hours tonight!" or "I am going to read even more than them!" It has been amazing seeing the children's reactions to winning, and their motivation increase tremendously. We want to continue to give them something to look forward to and having them connect reading with something positive.
