At the beginning of the school year, each student is given a formal reading assessment (including but not limited to I-Ready testing) to determine his/her independent and instructional reading levels and areas of academic need. Based on the results, it is believed that numerous students who are reading below grade level in first grade would benefit academically from having access to books both non-fiction and fiction. It is expected that the implementation of a classroom library would increase students' motivation to read books, regardless of ability therefore not only increasing their literacy but also their vocabulary and comprehension. Having a classroom library and a bookshelf to store the books on will greatly impact my students' daily lives. Research has shown that reading increases students' vocabulary and comprehension skills. Not only would my students have access to a fully library but also have the equipment necessary to keep books safely stored and organized allowing books to be easily accessible to students and ensure usability for years to come.
