Students want to know how to take a good picture, which means that they want control. High end DSLR cameras allow students to break down the different steps of taking a high quality photograph. They learn to control lighting, motion, noise quality, white balance, depth of field and more with DSLR cameras. For a long time, my goal has been to have 1 DSLR camera per student during in class activities. We constantly go out on campus during class and take pictures. I call them photo challenges because each assignment will pose a different problem or focus on a specific technique. It's a challenge and they have some friendly competition to see who can create the most technically well done and creative photo based on the challenge. For example, the Rock Challenge and Fast Shutter Speed Challenge. In the Rock Challenge, students have to work with different angles and compositional techniques to make a rock look visually interesting and in the Fast Shutter Speed Challenge, students have to work with specific camera settings to capture a creative action photo with no motion blur. Currently, students often have to work in small groups and share a camera. With these additional cameras and tripods, we'll get closer to our goal of 1 camera per student in a period!
