My class does not have a set of dictionaries. I believe that with the teacher by teacher resources and the use of dictionaries in my classroom that it can empower bilingual students to be responsible for their own learning. Once Ells are able to use a dictionary well, they are self-sufficient in finding the information on their own. Along with the Teacher pay Teacher resources and dictionaries it can present a very useful tool in a bilingual classroom. However, teachers need to EXPLICITLY teach dictionary skills so that they can be utilized to the maximum extent. Dictionary use can enhance vocabulary acquisition and comprehension. If the dictionary is sufficiently current, the Ells can see representations of contemporary culture seen through language. Students need to learn how a dictionary works, how a dictionary and reference resource can help them learn.
