Diversity is one of the amazing things about our world and my students. I love that they come from so many different types of backgrounds and can share those experiences with each other. Having access diverse books is such an important aspect in education because research actually shows that being exposed to people, that are different from us, actually helps reduce stereotypes. Our students can't always be exposed to all the diverse groups in society in their everyday life, but they can be introduced to them through literature. Every student should feel like they are important and deserve to be able to choose books that have characters that represent themselves and their classmates. Through these books, they will be able to learn how to cope with things they are dealing with within their own lives and the lives of others around them. It is so important for our students to see that diversity is a beautiful thing and we are all important and special. Having access to books that approach these topics will enrich my students' lives by bringing the world to them. Efren Divided will show my students what so many of their Hispanic peers have had to go through or their families have went through. It will also provide them with other copies of ProjectLIT books to explore. We use the buttons as a reading incentive. If a student reads a diverse book, then they earn a button with that book cover on it. You can walk down our halls and see students and teachers wearing the buttons that they have earned! I can't wait to keep that going.
