In classroom guidance, picture books are an engaging and educational way to teach good character, and assist with vocabulary development. In a guidance lesson that is planned around a picture book, students are able to explore other worlds, develop critical thinking skills, and become more aware of differences and similarities with other groups of people. This year's focus is on how kindness can change the world, and how ordinary people accomplish extraordinary goals by having a growth mindset. Our school has accepted The Great Kindness Challenge, a week long celebration of completing random acts of kindness in an effort to promote a culture of caring, respect and unity within our community. The goal setting guidance unit will focus on biographies of people who have accomplished great things through determination and positive thinking. In order to focus on these two areas, the guidance library is in need of specific picture books that encourage discussions and captivate young children's attention while teaching life-long Character and Career Readiness skills.
