Choices Magazine by Scholastic is full of nonfiction articles that present tough issues that my students are facing. They focus on the social and emotional needs of students. I know that every student that enters my room is dealing with some personal issue outside of school. Reading true testimonials from kids their own age will allow them to reevaluate their stance or outlook on many topics. While my students are reading about important life lessons, they will also be enhancing their reading skills for non-fiction text. Exposure to this type of text will not only help them with their academics, but it will set them up to become life-long readers.
