This year, more than halfway through the first quarter, I walked into an empty classroom for my first year of teaching. The school I work for, like many in the area, is low in resources. Despite these challenges, the spirit of the staff and the surrounding community provides the spark necessary for a positive learning environment that is full of opportunity. Still, I have quickly learned that being resourceful for my students is the name of the game. I was well aware that the task I was about to embark on was grand. However, as the return to in-person learning came earlier than expected, so did my students. Half of my students are in person and half of my students are online. The diverse needs of my learners are widespread, and yet the learning goals are all the same. Everyone has been hard at work, trying their best with the limited resources that my superiors have passed down to me. However, my students and all students deserve 110% of what is out there. A printer to be able to make master copies or to print off makeup work is a necessary function to every classroom. Pencil pouches so that every student can have the basic essentials, and bright paper to bring color and life to my review material. These are just a few examples, and if I could single handedly give them every single tool they would need, I would. Instead, I am recognizing that it takes a village and I am asking for your help to build our classroom. Having a space that feels warm and inviting is so important, especially when such bravery is being required of them during these uncertain times. Help me raise up their experience by providing me with some essentials to get started.
