Students in my second grade class are currently working on their persuasive writing projects. When I brought a wiggle stool into our classroom to try sizing options, they immediately began sharing opinions and reasons supporting how the new seating option would allow them to move a bit while participating in activities at their desks. Students suggested that we write about this topic, and that is where the idea for this project was born! Using wiggle stools will allow students to move quietly and complete tasks without distracting others seated around them, while enabling them to listen actively and participate appropriately. The stools provide students with a safe way to wiggle, as occasionally, some students rock on their chair while seeking an opportunity for movement. This can cause chairs to tip over or flip, resulting in injuries to students and damage to property. Because the stools do not have a back, students noted that sitting on them provides a more comfortable position to sit in resulting in better posture and an opportunity to build core strength. We also have a couple of other seating options available, and students are excited to have the opportunity to choose between a chair, wobble stool, wedge, and cushions. Students noted that their bodies get tired while sitting in one position in a chair, but they are hopeful that the wobble stool would help their body stay alert! Students also identified that movement within their space will help them be respectful, responsible, productive, and safe...following our school expectations!
