Every student should find themselves between the pages of William Golding's Lord of the Flies during their high school career. 10th graders at JHS will dive into this study of slow and steady degradation of morals that sometimes mimics what we see in our own lives either culturally or personally speaking. This text allows students to reflect on how what ultimately presents itself as bold-faced evil starts off as slow and subtle discomfort that humans tolerate until the ethical monster has grown so large that it cannot be controlled. With generous donor funding, this novel will present young minds with the chance to identify cruelty in its many forms, as they navigate alongside the boys from the text as they make choices--some ethical, some unethical. Ultimately, this text will encourage students to begin to self-reflect on ways they can overcome evil in their own lives with good.
