It is common for students to use manipulatives for math and science activities, but what if students could "build" their reading comprehension by using various types of arts and crafts materials? These items will be used to create Comprehension Construction Kits. The students will manipulate items such as pattern blocks to explain author's purpose, pipe cleaners and beads to count syllables and sequence events, and popsicle sticks and clothespins to talk about the main idea and supporting details in texts. The ability to use manipulatives to demonstrate reading comprehension rather than just the traditional paper and pencil used to answer questions will be life-changing for these diverse learners. Their confidence in their reading skills will soar!
