Fostering a passion for math is my life's work! In this unusual school year, students in my class are learning both at home and at school. In order to address the needs of children who are learning from home, we have to be creative in order to grant access to all learners. While some traditional methods can be translated digitally, tech tools will enhance our ability to demonstrate math strategies. So much of teaching math is traditionally done with paper and pencil, but we must elevate these methods to meet the needs of pandemic teaching! An iPad and an Apple Pencil will allow me to demonstrate math strategies to students who are in school and online simultaneously, as well as to save images of this modeling digitally to share with families in order to strengthen the connection between home and school. These tools can support physically demonstrating new concepts through the use of manipulatives as well as marking up text or writing answers as children share their thinking. The iPad can also be used as a whiteboard so that students can take notes that are recorded in real-time.
