As student's come back to hybrid-learning, they are going to need a safe place in the classroom besides their desks. A rug is more than a decoration, it builds a sense of community. My students love to read no matter how hard they struggle, but I can tell that some of my shy students might need an extra push. A classroom area that is specially designated and decorated with an array of books with a grand rug in the middle will encourage those shy readers to go out of their comfort zone.
Many of these students do not have a nice, quiet place to read at home, as they share their room with multiple siblings. Most of the parents are single mothers who work hard to give their child the best education possible. My job is to make it easier for them by making sure my classroom environment is warm and inviting. Especially since about half of my students are English Learners, it is extremely important for their comprehension and oral reading development that they feel encouraged to read. Creating that colorful area for them will enhance that outlook on reading and in time boost their confidence as well.
