We teach over one thousand students in our amazing art department EVERY YEAR. We focus on student choice for final project creations. This requires that each student "choose" the reference they would like to use. We believe that realism in art requires observational skills to be developed. Experts have found that artistic skills are at least 50% observation. Therefore, it is extremely beneficial for students to print a reference to work from. The reference photos help build observational skills as well as hand-eye coordination to improve student abilities. This approach allows students to work in the classroom as well as at home to achieve the art standards; 1) Create: Students will generate artistic work by conceptualizing, organizing, and completing their artistic ideas. They will refine original work through persistence, reflection, and evaluation. 2) Connect: Students will relate artistic skills, ideas, and work with personal meaning and external context.
