Learning social skills and how to handle tough situations is very important for all students, but especially for the primary grades as they are just learning how to problem solve on their own. My teaching philosophy focuses a great deal on educating the whole child and teaching students the skills to help them deal with frustration, anger, disappointment, etc. Each book in the Ninja series focuses on a different emotion. Our class has the Angry Ninja book and students love it so much that we read the same one over and over. The books will talk about some different strategies that you can use if you are faced with that emotion. For example, our Angry Ninja taught us how to use the 1+3+10 strategy for dealing with anger (say 1 calm word to yourself like "relax", take 3 slow breaths and then count to 10). I have always wanted to have more of the Ninja social-emotional books because students respond to them so well. I have seen students use these strategies many times and I have had parents tell me that their student is using the strategy at home. The books that I wish to get are all emotions that students this age experience (dishonesty, shy, anxious, grumpy, etc.) These books could be used for years to come and my current class would be ecstatic to get more of these awesome books!
