Books are windows to new places, new ideas, new people, and new experiences - and kids of every age should have an opportunity to find them! My school is K-12, which means all 13 grades share one library; but of course the library mostly caters to elementary grades. As the 7-12 English teacher, I want students to do more than just read the class novel I assign. I want them to discover the passion and fire of reading for themselves. I was the student in school who read the whole library by sophomore year, and I have students following right in my footsteps. To help foster this discovery of reading, my students in grades 7-12 need more books to choose from. I don't want them to read the same old thing, I want them to find something new. I also want those students who don't think they like to read to discover they could be wrong. That's why I've chosen such a wide variety of reading materials: from YA romance to YA mysteries to non-fiction sports titles. Something for everyone (I hope)! Since students can "check" books out of my classroom just like the library, they can take them home or carry them to other classes. Increasing my classroom library will only increase the opportunities to learn!
