I teach at a brand-new elementary school in Northern Manhattan. Although times are uncertain, we opened our doors for in person learning taking the appropriate safety precautions for our founding students and families. Our students have begun in-person learning and our music class has been an opportunity for students to ease the transition back to school. Our students are very engaged during music class and through the exploration of different instruments came across the ukulele. As a first instrument, ukuleles teach kids about music and music theory. Through ukulele lessons, a child learns about beat, harmony, melody, rhythm, and tempo. The ukulele also helps children develop eye-hand coordination as well as independent movement of fingers. We want to insure our students have access to this instrument for exploration and hope to acquire 25 ukuleles for our music classroom. We want to bring joy and music to our school community.
