Books create an opportunity for students in less diverse areas to learn about their incredible world. My students often have little exposure to non-white people, or to people whose sexual preferences and gender identities fall outside of the cisgender, heteronormative business as usual. There is a beautiful, colorful world out there for them to discover. As our library becomes more diverse, their expectations of themselves and others will evolve and develop. My students are hungry to learn more, and I want to give them the necessary tools to become equity-promoting, informed citizens!
