Koloa Elementary sits on the South side of Kauai, the Garden Island of Hawaii, near Poipu Beach. We are a small (250) Title I, low income school. Most of our students receive free school lunch through the Federal Free and Reduce Lunch program. In spite of the economic challenges the students are passing state testing in record numbers. They love to read novels during our DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time after lunch. As the teacher reads a book aloud each student follows along in his or her book. Every student is engaged! They audibly sigh or cry out, "Just read a little more," as we end the DEAR time. I wish that you could see their excitement. We bring books to life through research and activities. Koloa 5th graders move onto middle school for 6th grade where they are succeeding! 30% of our students made honor roll in the first quarter. Reading novels is one of the ways we give our students on this island in the Pacific Ocean a glimpse of the world.
