As an educator, you want every chance for your students to succeed. While this has been a crazy year for education thus far, that is what it is like for our students every year. As students with developmental delays, it takes a little extra time and persistence for the students to develop the education goals and life skills that they need in order to take on life in the real world. As a SPED teacher, I know what it is like to teach students who are all at different levels. What works for one child, necessarily does not work for the next. It is a challenge to locate activities that can be easily differentiated. Gaining the dramatic play centers that I have requested will begin the learning of Life Skills to help our students succeed in life. The "Grocery Store/Lemonade Stand" will be utilized in two ways. The first way will be on the grocery side. We will put groceries out in the store for the students to take a grocery list and "shop" for the materials on the list. The skills that will be learned in this center will be how to gather the items needed from a list and where to put them in the cart. This will also help students recognize what each food item is. The second way this will be utilized is by the lemonade stand. The students will learn how to do small jobs, like selling lemonade, to make money for things that they need/want. The "Melissa and Doug Grocery Store and Shopping Cart" will be used to teach two major life skills. It will be used to show students how to place their groceries on the conveyor belt/pay using a debit card and the second will be how to scan/bag as the clerk.
