With the challenges of Covid-19 in education, adapting of STEM curriculum in our hybrid model has taken curriculum ideas outside and to focus on "birds in the burbs". In order for students to observe bird behavior, this project is going to focus on student-generated investigations around bird behavior. The project is a collaboration between two middle schools in the South Washington County School District- Cottage Grove Middle School and Lake Middle School. The students will be in 7th and 8th grades taking a STEM class focused on investigating problems with bird feeding, weather, location, food, migration, species distributions, and conservation. Students will plan and develop, carry out investigations, and present solutions. Students will be connected across schools, at home, and in class. We plan to build bird feeder/weather study posts in different locations, as well as build nesting locations to study further bird behavior in the area. For students to study bird behavior, they will need to be at a distance where the bird doesn't feel threatened by their presence. Binoculars provide students with the ability to capture manual smartphone photographs and to observe bird behaviors for their investigations. Students will communicate observations and data analysis across grade levels and schools.
