History is often thought of as boring. Many people do not like history because of the way it can be taught. History textbooks often show only one perspective of an event and that can create a biased interpretation of the past. It is important for my students to have access to non-fiction texts that are engaging while also historically accurate. My students come from diverse backgrounds and all have different life experiences. These texts will provide students with voices that have been missing from their academic experience. In the Shadow of Liberty provides students with stories of enslaved people who helped form our nation, but have been left out of history books. An Indigenous People's History of the United States for Young People provides students with context on the effects U.S. imperialism has had on indigenous nations. Please help me help my students to study all aspects of American History!
