Our environment is delicately balanced, and it is critical that student's understand how this balance works. To assist in learning these concepts, our class wants to build their own environment using a two liter bottle to create a micro-ecosystem. Students will get hands on learning experience by creating a terrarium that includes both an aquatic and terrestrial environment. To start, the two liter bottle is cut in half with the top being inverted. The bottom holds small rocks and water for our Mosquito Fish to call home with a small aquatic plant to provide oxygen. The top will be filled with soil and host a small plant as well. These two environments are connected with a small rope so that they can provide each other with necessary nutrients (i.e. water, nitrogen, etc). The best part about this project besides being so hands on and creative, is that students get to take it home and continue to observe and learn from their environments! This is a fantastic way to help bridge the gap for students who may be quarantined at home due to illness (Covid-19). They will have the opportunity to continue to learn and grow even when they are not in the physical classroom.
