As a first year teacher, my mission is to create a library in which my students can see themselves and others in the books that they choose to read. The classroom library is a place for students to both feel seen themselves, and be exposed to stories and characters that are different from them. These new books would give my students the opportunity to have a library that reflects a variety of identities and experiences to match their own. All of these books have been chosen with my students interests in mind, and with this addition to their library, they will have even more opportunities to choose enjoyable reads during their independent reading times. Having this variety will also allow my students to read independently at their own level, strengthening their abilities as independent readers.
