Starting at a new school or going back to school after being away for over six months is scary for adults, it has to be even harder to return as a child. School no longer looks the same for these students as they cannot see their friends faces or even their new teachers because we are all doing our part to keep each other safe by wearing masks. As a new art teacher in my district, I have to learn over 800 new students names and faces which is extremely hard to do when they are covered by masks. The button project has been used in hospitals to help children see the faces of the medical professionals who are there to help them. Children are not used to not seeing their friendly teachers faces and with the use of the Button machine kit, I may help reduce some of the stress they may be feeling when they return in September.
