As a speech therapist in special education in Brooklyn, I added to my caseload this past February a lively Dominican boy who recently turned six, and was transferred to our school from a regular education classroom. He has issues with emotional disturbance and ADHD, and presents as an engaging and lively student who prefers dancing to sitting at his desk. Shortly after this major transition, he lost his father, and was in the Dominican Republic to attend the funeral when the Covid-19 pandemic caused travel restrictions, keeping him and his mother there for over a month. When they returned in April, the mother found employment as a home attendant and with the help of our school, this student was able to attend daycare for essential workers' children. He received an iPad with WiFi from our school for remote learning. This student was making significant advances in remote learning, participating independently at times and enthusiastically engaging in activities and assignments, but unfortunately his iPad was stolen sometime in May. After all the traumatic events of his recent life, this student was profoundly upset by this loss and was still demonstrating emotional episodes triggered by it for weeks after it happened. It seems clear that this student would benefit greatly from the use of an iPad, which is why I am asking for help in replacing it. His mother is dedicated to his progress and has been adamant that she will not allow another loss of this nature to happen to her son. Please consider helping this wonderful, deserving child who has been through so much, and loves to learn.
