It is a privilege and precious gift to spark a love of learning in my kindergartners, who I affectionately call my Shining Stars. Playing educational games on iPads will be fun and motivating and will expand their knowledge across the curriculum. The iPad’s versatility, with numerous educational resources and applications, makes it the ideal platform to engage my Stars. Research shows that students, even those with limited reading skills, can be successful playing educational games which build self-confidence and strengthen fine motor skills, eye hand coordination, and problem-solving skills. Games also promote higher order thinking and enhance executive functioning skills such as flexibility, planning, working memory, perseverance and focus/attention. In Language Arts, the use of iPads would expand our classroom library and provide multilingual books for my English language learners. This, combined with the Google Translate application, would greatly assist them in understanding a new language, thus gaining more confidence in learning to read and participating in class discussions. Phonemic awareness applications can give immediate feedback for letter/sound recognition and sight words. Using an iPad to draw and write stories will encourage students to be independent thinkers while I assist others needing more support. Math and science applications provide immediate feedback during 1:1 counting exercises, number recognition, computation skills, and 3D spatial awareness puzzles. Other applications introduce astronomy and chemistry to young learners. These STEM skills are vital to providing a solid foundation for the next generation of explorers. Social Studies applications help with geography and map skills. Students can research and visualize their families’ countries and their history, track butterflies and whales, and much more. Having iPads would be a valuable tool for building a strong 21st century education for young students. With your consideration and generous support, together we can launch and inspire my Shining Stars to reach their potential.
