We are learning what it means to be alive in biology. What characteristics do we share in common with oak trees, mushrooms, microscopic bacteria, and blue whales? Rather than giving my students a definition of life and a list of characteristics they all share, we are creating a definition as we learn about the world around us and its inhabitants. My school has a very limited number of archaic microscopes that are all but defunct - being able to show live specimens in class on a digital microscope projected on the smartboard would allow all students (including virtual students) to take part in discovering the wonder of the microscopic world. The next realm of the living world we want to learn about is the diversity of life that can be found in our water sources - protists. I'd like my students to discover the broad array of organisms that are living just outside of our ability to observe them. I believe this will spark curiosity, wonder, and joy!
