One of the most exciting and applicable lessons learned in any classroom is one that is focused on who you are as a person and what informs your perception of the world around you. I hope to use these classic works by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Upton Sinclair to help students explore the American Dream: what it used to be, what it is, and what it is becoming. The understanding of how societal perceptions can make or break a person's ability to succeed can help students in their efforts to overcome circumstances and succeed in their own lives, as well as, perhaps, to reach out to others around them and lift them up.
