The students were ecstatic when we opened all the boxes; many said it felt just like Christmas morning! Sharing my excitement about books and reading with my students, and then watching as they became just as giddy, was a moment I will always remember. Seeing how excited they were about each new book was truly amazing, and the immediate impact of this diverse collection is phenomenal. This library is more than just a place to find good stories; it is now a safe space where every student can see their own life reflected and, just as importantly, explore the lives of others. Your support didn't just buy books—it invested directly into creating a more compassionate, understanding, and inclusive classroom community.\r\n\r\nFor our donors who love to read but don't teach, these books are teaching critical lessons far beyond phonics and comprehension. The most vital skill we introduce is perspective-taking. We use these texts to move from simple reading to complex discussion, asking students to genuinely step into a character's shoes and understand a different experience—whether that's navigating a new country or feeling misunderstood in their own community. This develops genuine empathy, challenging stereotypes, and teaching the difference between simply tolerating differences and actively celebrating them. The new books are the foundation for our social and emotional learning curriculum.\r\n\r\nNow, reading in our classroom is vibrant and engaged. Instead of feeling like reading is a chore, many students are sharing, discussing, and checking out more books than ever before. Students are seeing themselves and finding themselves in these books, and it is so inspiring. I've already seen incredible moments of connection. For example, one of my quietest students, who rarely engages during class, immediately connected with a book about a family celebrating a cultural festival. She lit up, sharing her own family's memories and becoming a valued, confident contributor to the discussion. Thank you for giving my students the tools they need to become not just strong readers, but truly empathetic and globally-minded citizens.","fullyFundedDate":1758000300164,"projectUrl":"project/a-world-of-stories-building-empathy-thr/9692323/","projectTitle":"A World of Stories: Building Empathy Through Diverse Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Buttars","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10006288_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1754590411416","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/natalie-buttars"},{"teacherId":8567268,"projectId":9282901,"letterContent":"Thank you for enhancing StoryTime! We are all excited to start our literature circles and explore the unique worlds within these books.\r\n\r\nHaving access to these books not only allows my students to read high-interest, young adult fiction, but it also gives them the opportunity to connect with literature on a personal level. They will be able to make meaningful connections between the dystopian societies in the books and the world around them.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has made a huge difference in my classroom. Because of your contributions, three out of the four walls of my 9th-grade English classroom are now covered with large whiteboards, and the impact has been immediate and profound.\r\n\r\nMy students and I are using these new resources daily to transform our learning space into a dynamic, collaborative environment. \r\n\r\nWe recently began our unit on Non-Fiction texts and the whiteboards have become the central hub for our brainstorming sessions. Students are no longer limited to small notebooks; they can now work in groups, mapping out complex themes like justice and prejudice and visually connecting claims with supporting evidence. \r\n\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the whiteboards, their reactions were a mix of awe and pure excitement. They immediately wanted to draw on them and explore the vast, empty space. Once we started using them for lessons, that initial excitement shifted into a genuine sense of ownership over their learning. The boards have empowered them to think bigger and to be more active participants in class.\r\n\r\nI'll never forget the moment a student, Lily, drew a large graphic outline on the board for her group to organize and keep track of the central ideas and supporting evidence from the text they were annotating. Her group immediately jumped in, adding their own connections and ideas, and what started as a simple concept quickly evolved into a comprehensive, shared understanding of the text. It was truly a moment of collective discovery, and it wouldn't have been possible without this new resource.\r\n\r\nOur next steps for this unit will be to use the whiteboards for peer review and essay outlining. Each student will draft a thesis statement on a portion of the whiteboard, and their classmates will provide immediate, color-coded feedback. This collaborative process will help them move from big ideas to clear, structured arguments in preparation for writing their essays.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. You have not just provided a piece of equipment; you have unlocked new ways for my students to think, collaborate, and learn. Your gift has had a tangible and lasting impact on my classroom and my students' education.
