Every morning at 8:30, you can hear 19 consecutive chimes as our first graders join our class Zoom. Their faces pop up on our screens, expectant, excited … ready for school online! Most students are English language learners — not only do they come ready to boldly tackle six subjects a day, but they are also learning a whole new language via computer! They come from Guatemala, Puerto Rico, and Africa. And they are making progress. We have watched our once timid student (with the least English in our class) become so comfortable in our virtual classroom that she now raises her hand in every subject. Last week in front of the whole class, she explained that the difference between a photograph of a playground and a map of a playground is that in the photograph, you can see shadows. As you can see, our class is resilient to these challenging times and a different kind of school. We have faced many hurdles together as a class. Recently, a student asked me, “Ms. J-S, can you please whisper? My baby brother is sleeping!” Though surprised, our writing lesson was taught in a whisper that day. Recently, we watched one of our quieter students turn to his older brother and declare, “I need quiet here!” Learning on a computer, from home, at a daycare, or at Grandma’s house can be very difficult for students because of circumstances that are out of their control. Supplying our students with things like headphones can help them stay focused on school no matter what’s going on around them. Whiteboards and notebooks will help with handwriting and vocabulary. With your help, we can purchase materials that will make school run a more smoothly for our students during this challenging time. Thank you for your support!
