When students' basic needs for a safe learning environment are met, they are better able to engage and learn! As we adjust to teaching and learning in a hybrid classroom, we must make adjustments to keep students safe--both physically and emotionally. For student safety, we are unable to use desks to store materials. In order to maintain social distancing, we can only fit 12 desks in the room, which creates a need to share desks. This is necessary as one student will use the desk on Monday and Tuesday, and another student will use the same desk on Thursday and Friday. Storage drawers will allow my 23 students to have a place of their own to safely store their school supplies and books while still allowing for social distancing. The conversation cards and writing prompts will help address the social and emotional needs of my fifth grade students. We will use them in our Morning Meetings each day, as we come together in person and virtually as one cohesive group. Students will form friendships, develop coping skills, and build a growth mindset.
