I am an occupational therapist (OT) that works with students with varying abilities, including those on the autism spectrum, that have shown to have difficulty with engaging in remote learning. During in person therapy these students benefited from hands on materials to help them learn and keep their attention, however many of them don't have these classroom materials at home.
Fine motor and visual motor skills are developed with hands on materials, not from looking at a screen.
The students that I work with benefit from visual demonstration and repetition to gain new skills. The white board will serve as a tool for both drawing simple shapes, forming letters and writing words allowing them to complete a task, erase and try it again. Completing tasks on a vertical surface help young students strengthen the small muscles in the hand. The magnetic side of the board will allow students to manipulate the letters or build words, strengthening hands while incorporating academic skills. The scissors selected allow for flexibility for varying skill levels. The yellow lever allows the scissors to provide assistance for opening the scissors or can be positioned to allow a student to use the scissors independently. The size and thickness of the index cards make it easier for younger students to learn how to cut. The lines printed on the cards will allow students to begin cutting on a line when appropriate. Therefore all of these supplies will allow for customization of therapy services while the students are at home learning.
