We all learn more efficiently and retain information when we are active. Students, sitting in hard, uncomfortable chairs, are not conducive to the active learning teachers seek. Students must be engaged. One way to facilitate this is through movement. With flexible seating, students are given the luxury of movement, while sitting. Alternative sitting does not only provide movement, but also, stability for those students with attention difficulties and sensory issues. Being a Reading Specialist, my students come to me with a negative attitude towards reading. Providing them with alternative seating is a positive in the right direction.
