Reading is an exercise for the mind. It helps us calm down and relax. Reading opens the door to new and exciting worlds. Children who read grow up to have better cognitive skills. With the Pandemic and the challenge of remote learning, it has become more difficult to give my students the strong foundation they need to enrich their love of reading and see it bloom. Cultivating a love of reading means encouraging students to read beyond the school walls. Finding the appropriate books for independent reading that will ignite this excitement and getting the books into their hands is critical. This project will provide students with an independent reading book they can take to the park, read at bedtime and curl up with at night.
Bringing these books to students in need has an immeasurable impact, and for many, it may be the first book they have ever owned. The best way for my students to increase their reading ability is to be able to read more. I have chosen a selection of the hottest books I can't keep on the shelves in the library for this project. Because of the Pandemic, my students are unable to check out books from the school library. This "Today a Reader, Tomorrow a Leader" project will help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already demonstrate a keen interest in independent reading, and this project will help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
