As the youngest member of the Selma March 1965, Lynda Lowery gives a first hand account in her memoir, Turning 15 on the Road to Freedom. Along with reading the book, students will have the opportunity to see history represented through artistic expression by viewing a video of the musical performance. By bringing Lynda Lowery's story to life through music and drama students will be able to make deeper connections to the actual hardships African Americans faced in order to gain equal rights. As years go by, the opportunity for students to hear and learn from actual members of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement get fewer and far between. As young teens themselves, my students can relate well to Lynda Lowery's past. They will be able to see images of themselves in her story and gain inspiration from her strength and determination.
